Zweller was an academy friend of Ensign Jean-Luc Picard. Following their graduation from Starfleet Academy in 2327, Ensigns Corey Zweller, Marta Batanides and Jean-Luc Picard were assigned to Starbase Earhart to await their first deep-space assignments. During this layover, Corey was challenged to a game of dom-jot by a Nausicaan, leading to a fight in which Picard was impaled by one of the Nausicaans and his heart was damaged beyond repair.
