In 2374, Walters and 34 other members of the elite Red Squad embarked on a training cruise aboard the U.S.S. Valiant under the command of Captain Ramirez. The ship became caught behind enemy lines when the Dominion war broke out and the senior officers were killed in battle. Before he died, Ramirez turned command over to cadet Tim Watters. Acting Commander Watters defied the odds and kept the ship intact for eight months in Dominion-held territory. Watters was a charismatic leader and the rest of the elite group of cadets followed him loyally, failing to see serious errors in Watter’s judgement. On stardate 51825.4, he and most of his crew were killed and the Valiant destroyed when Watters took the ship on an impossible mission to single-handedly destroy a massive Dominion battleship.
